The transformation of the Election Commission

As we go out to vote, all eyes will be on the Election Commission and how it handles polling day and deters phantom voters. In the original Merdeka Constitution, an
impartial Election Commission (SPR) was put into place. Since then,
various Constitutional amendments have transformed the SPR into a shell
of its original self.

Improve the public health care system

Malaysians want a government that lives up to its
responsibility of ensuring that all citizens and other residents of
Malaysia have equitable access to safe, adequate and quality health
care, said participants at a forum on the proposed national health financing scheme. No one must be denied proper care because of lack of means.

Local plans needed

Widespread opposition and unhappiness about the PGCC has been a feature of the election campaign in Penang. At the massive 60,000-strong rally at theHan Chiang school field a couple of nights ago, speakers slammed the project to loud applause from the crowd. So, it is clear that the opposition comes not just from the well-heeled residents neighbouring the Penang Turf Club. The PGCC Campaign Group makes clear its position on the proposal to develop the Turf Club land.

Restore local council elections

One of the major election issues this time around has been the demand for the restoration of local council elections. Local councils have become unaccountable, indifferent to people’s
woes, inefficient in their management and intolerable in the way
services are provided. Councillors become arrogant, abuse their powers,
serve themselves, not the public, and are sometimes the source of
corruption. Think about that as you go out to vote.

Minimum wage and Cola now!

The government has awarded hefty pay hikes to civil servants, but
private sector workers have been forgotten, say Syed Shahir bin Syed Mohamud and G Rajasekaran. The MTUC is proposing a
minimum wage of RM900 and a cost of living allowance (Cola) of RM300, but so far there has been no response from the government. Think of that as you go out to vote.

The Justice system
